Karen Mariela Henríquez is a first-generation college graduate from El Salvador. She recently obtained her master’s degree in Sociology at the University of Houston. In her thesis project titled, “Caregiving with Gratitude: Gendered Roles and Experiences of Latina Caregivers Providing Familial and Hospice Care in Texas,” she explored the unique aspects of Latinas providing care services, roles, responsibilities, challenges, and the long-term personal health issues that arise from providing care. Her project can contribute to what we can do as a society to help and support the growing elderly Latino population in the United States and the caregivers that will be needed in years to come. Karen believes in the importance of obtaining a higher level of education and giving back to the community.
