Mexican-American History & Culture in 20th Century Houston

1100 Bagby St., Houston, TX 77002

The mural “Mexican-American History & Culture in 20th Century Houston”, highlights the places, personalities, concepts and events that shaped the Mexican-American community of Houston. This permanent addition to The Heritage Society is important for several reasons. As a non-Latino commissioned artwork it is significant in its recognition of the Mexican community’s role in Texas history. Additionally, its placement in the Connally Plaza, against a dramatic backdrop of City Hall and the downtown skyline, presents the mural as a cultural landmark in the historic heart of heart of the city (and the Heritage Society) and encourages native Houstonians and tourists to view the contributions of Mexican Americans. Furthermore, the mural serves as a reminder to the Mexican American community. Its visual depth provides a sense of history to educate viewers about the legacies and influences of ethnic Mexicans in Houston.
