George R. Brown Convention Center

George R. Brown Centro de Convenciones

Named after George Rufus Brown (1898-1983) the convention center opened on September 26, 1987. On July 28, 2001 there was an expansion for an adjacent 1,200-room convention headquarters hotel that came to be known as the Hilton Americas-Houston at a cost of $165 million. Construction on the GRB and the surrounding area was completed in December of 2016. After Hurricane Katrina, approximately 7,000 people went to the convention center, due to the Astrodome being at its full capacity. Houston's largest pop-culture event Comicpalooza draws a massive crowd every year and continues to increase as the convention becomes more popular.
