Casita

This imaginative wooden house-shaped structure is part of an ongoing community project titled IM/Perfect Home. Through IM/Perfect Home’s innovative and flexible format, I am able to invite individuals to get inspired and collaborate with me to finish this portable mural type artwork at different events and/or places. For this very special commission, I was inspired by University of Houston’s official colors, red and white, to create a “Casita” for UH’s official mascot Shasta.

Students, staff and passersby are invited to participate in this project by drawing or writing on the Casita, while reflecting on questions like Where is Home? What is Home? Who is Home? Or just completing the sentence “Home is_____”. With this project, I am interested in generating an opportunity for collaboration in an accessible and inclusive environment

From my perspective, contemporary visual art embraces experimentation and innovation as well as it reflects on the complex themes that shape our diverse and rapidly changing world. Currents events, social and economic issues, as well as individual life circumstances have a deep impact that challenges people’s current perceptions about subjects like migration, the evolving nature of home, cultural identity, and family. As an immigrant myself, I seek to raise awareness on these issues and how they’re connected to contemporary art via my IM/Perfect Home project.
