Gulfton Story Trail Mural

5905 Rampart St, Houston, TX 77081

The Gulfton Story Trail is an immersive art experience that invites the viewer to discover the neighborhood’s many cultures and voices. Jesus Sanchez’ Celebration of Diversity is based on Mayanlay Kelleh’s poem, titled, Family Fun. On the side wall of a discount store, the mural depicts smiling African, Latino and Middle Eastern children with a technicolor eagle soaring behind them. Each child has the same blue aura around them, which he says represents their shared inner light. The colorful eagle is an homage to Sanchez’s hometown of Mexico City. To Sanchez, it was important to ensure that immigrant and refugee faces and cultures be present in his art because he rarely saw this community represented in Houston murals. Its vibrant colors seek to draw viewers in, bring people together rather than divide them, positively portray a community’s identity, and celebrate diversity by exhibiting the multicultural aspect of Gulfton.
