Harvey, A Meditation

The Gulfton Story Trail Mural

5930 Bellaire Blvd. Houston, TX 77002

Alexander “Zú” Arzú and Jesse De Leon worked together to create “Harvey, A Meditation” as part of the Gulfton Story Trail. One of 12 inspiring murals born from poetry written by Gulfton students, expressed visually by muralists, and experienced by residents and visitors, Arzú and De Leon’s “Harvey, A Meditation” is based on an essay by Sara Stjepanovic. Considering the impact of Hurricane Harvey, Arzú described the mural as one of reflection to ponder what one can do during hard times. This is depicted in the figure, which symbolizes mediation, prayer, optimism, and hope. While the warm fire colors represent the figure’s past, the blue and green sky before her are reflective of a better future. The colors reflect a path, the shorter warm fire colors represent a letting go, while the longer blue and green reflect brighter future.
