The Kenya Project, 2015

1122 W.Gray St., Houston, TX 77019

Known for a variety of creative expressions, from live paintings to sculptures, self-taught artist Natalia Victoria has participated in community art projects. Commissioned by Living + Icon Productions, which aims to celebrate individuals who have championed over adversity and can serve as inspiration to others, Victoria’s mural features a woman with glasses against a blue background. Kenya Paopao was chosen as the mural’s subject due to her difficult challenges with cancer. After she lost her mother to thyroid cancer, Kenya discovered that her mother’s will stipulated that she also be screened. Tested shortly after her mother’s passing, Kenya discovered was herself diagnosed with thyroid cancer. In the summer of 2015, after going through treatments and an emotional challenge, she is in remission. The project was envisioned by her friends and loved ones as a celebration of her successes, acknowledgement of her struggles, and message of inspiration to others.
