Mosaic mural on Hardie board
3130 Navigation Blvd.,
Houston, TX 77003
Navigation was commissioned by the Houston Arts Alliance. This small fleet of colorful ceramic mosaics in the shape of paper airplanes has a stealth attitude. Gliding along the side of a warehouse-like brick building owned by furniture maker James Dawson, they appear to be taking off from the abandoned railroad tracks adjacent to the property. It is a mosaic made of Hardie board and screwed onto the building with colorful tile ceramics. The paper airplanes reflect the “transportation” of family histories. Considering the East End’s rich Mexican American history, the space has a quilt-inspired pattern. Additionally, Sifuentes’ use of red, white, and blue tiles represent NASA while the coffee cups are representative of the local Maxwell House factory. Sifuentes states that "If you paint a picture on a wall it's going to last, what, maybe 30 years. But tile lasts forever, as long as the building isn't torn down."
