Luis Jiménez

Polychrome fiberglass with car paint

1987

Luis Jimenez was an American Sculptor of Mexican descent, born in El Paso, Texas in 1940. He studied art and architecture at the University of Texas in Austin with additional studies in Mexico City. He would later teach sculpture at the University of Houston.

His work, often in brightly painted fiberglass, tells the story of his Mexican heritage and the legends of the South West. His Chicano heritage can be seen in the depiction of everyday Latinos engaged in celebratory activities, or the animals and livestock that are a part of their life. The work, usually figurative, are typically sculpted from fiberglass and brought to life with car paint, referring the low-rider culture.

Jimenez was killed in a studio accident in Hondo, New Mexico, while working on a commission of a eight-foot-high mustang for the Denver Airport.

Houston Airports owns a second piece by this important Latin-American artist located at Bush Intercontinental Airport.
