Miguel Miramontes Carmona was born in Guadalajara, Jalisco, and raised in a poor family. As a young boy he learned trade skills as a tailor, silversmith and artisan of religious figures. At the age of 29 he emigrated to the nation’s capital where he enrolled at the prestigious San Carlos Art Academy. In the early 1950s he joined the staff at the university of Guadalajara’s School of P;astic Arts where he headed the sculpture department for three decades. His artistic legacy comprises more than 50 sculptures that grace public spaces, including the bronze sculpture of Spanish Catholic priest Don Miguel Hidalgo y Castillo, leader of the Mexican War of Independence, and recognized as the Father of the Nation.
