Sawyer Yards

Sawyer Yards 2101 Winter St, Houston, TX 77007 Sawyer Yards, a six-building campus with 350 artist studios and more than 400 artists, is the largest art community in the United States. twenty-four city blocks of repurposed industrial buildings defined create the campus: The Silos at Sawyer Yards, Silver Street Studios, Spring Street Studios, Summer Street Studios, Sabine Street and Winter Street Studios. Several Latino artists have studios and exhibit at Sawyer Yards.

Girl with Rabbits

Michael C. Rodriguez is a Houston-based artist and multimedia designer. Rodriguez interweaves fine art, street art, the art of illustration and graphic design while addressing visual constructs of pop art. As an extension to a previous painting, Rodriguez created Girl with Rabbits. His inspiration for the murals combines his love of nature, animals, and-1960s illustration and comics. Considering his background as a graphic designer and illustrator, Rodriguez uses his experience to bring the same kind of aesthetic to his murals. After hand drawing the image, he brings them into digital programs, redraws on the computer, and builds on what he created from pencil and paper. Despite the time-consuming process of transferring from the computer to a wall, this leads to the final project, in which he paints with paint and brushes.

Jose Cordova’s artwork is part of a collaboration of 14 artists who created an 800-foot-long collaborative mural making Art Alley at Sawyer Yards the “coolest alley in Houston.”

A native Houstonian, and son of two Mexican American parents, he fell in love with the rich culture of Mexico which can be seen in his artwork. Enamored with history and yet also intrigued by the simplicity of modernity he studied architecture at the Gerald D. Hines College of Architecture at the University of Houston. He was able to take his passion and knowledge of street art and translate it to the straight and crisp lines of architecture to produce his artwork. His life has always been about balance. In much of his work, you can see he is always trying to bridge the past and the present which is why he is always looking up at the stars and painting them.
