The bronze bust of Mexican President Benito Juarez stands in the International Scuplture Garden in Hermann park on a granite pedestal. It is the work of Julian Martinez and has been part of the City of Houston’s civic art collection since 1985. The only native to serve as President of Mexico (he was of Zapotec ancestry), Juarez served five terms as President and he is considered a national hero in Mexico.

Cancer, There Is Hope (bronze)

McGovern Centennial Gardens,

1500 Hermann Dr.,

Houston, TX 77004

The bronze sculpture “Cancer, There Is Hope” stands in a traffic circle in Hermann Park. It was cast in 1990, shortly after the 1989 death of its creator, Mexican sculptor Victor Salmones. It was given to the City by the Richard and Annette Bloch Foundation.

Victor Salmones (1937-1989) was born in Mexico City and, after a stint in commercial art, attended the Instituto de Bellas Artes. He opened a sculpture studio in Cuernavaca in 1966, and won several prestigious art prizes during the course of his career.

There were plans to remove the sculpture, as of 2021, because of vandalism beyond repair.
