Established in 1969, the Public Art of the University of Houston System (Public Art UHS) is the oldest, most significant, and only collecting arts organization within the University of Houston System, the fourth-largest university system in Texas. Fiesta Jarabe (1991-1993, Painted fiberglass)

The 10-foot-tall piece, known as “Fiesta Jarabe,” depicts two middle-aged Hispanic dancers taking part in a hat dance. It was created by Luis Jimenez, a former UH faculty member who was known for making large colorful fiberglass sculptures depicting Southwestern and Hispanic themes. Jimenez utilized materials that are associated with the commercial industry and the individuals who work in this industry as labor force. Fiesta Jarabe is the second of a series of five representations of a couple dancing the Jarabe Tapatío, the choreographic folk dance traditional to Guadalajara, Mexico.



The work celebrates the working classes by representing their bodies in a social realistic style of monumental scale. The seasoned couple performs zapateando around the sombrero in full regalia Tapatia. The organic form of the sculpture captures their energies as they dance while contrasting their warm colors with undulating shapes and achieves to communicate the power of their bodies and of their performance. This piece is part of the University of Houston’s Public Art Collection.

Double Physichromie

Carlos Cruz-Diez began as a graphic designer and advertising man in his native Caracas. Early experiments with color sparked an interest in visual perception and led him to give up graphic design in order to pursue art on a full-time basis. "Double Physichromie" was Cruz-Diez’s first permanent public commission in the United States and one of his largest artworks. In keeping with works from the "Physichromie" (or physical color) series, which began in 1959, the artist explores the concept of “additive color.” This color does not exist on the surface itself but is perceived by the eye as a result of the parallel lines of color that intersect on the plane. "Double Physichromie" shows Cruz-Diez’s intense interest in color and color theory. When standing still in front of it, the viewer can appreciate the complexity of the colors and color combinations used on more than 2000 of its aluminum pieces.

Orante/Mujer con las Manos Cruzadas

During his life, José Jesús Francisco Zúñiga Chavarría was considered Mexico’s most prominent sculptor and given the nickname ‘Maestro.’ His most popular series Peasant Women represents the simple life. Zúñiga would sculpt female models in poses easy to hold for long periods of time. He portrayed these Mexican Indian women in all their majesty as mother, healer, comforter, and matriarch. By exemplifying the struggles and pride Zúñiga bronzes became eternal figures, forging a link to Mexico’s cultural past. “Orante/Mujer con las Manos Cruzadas” displays all attributes of his work that made Zúñiga a famous sculptor.
