University of Houston’s Center for Mexican American & Latino/a Studies [CMALS]
3553 Cullen Blvd., Room 323
Houston, TX 77204
Established 1972
Created in 1972, CMALS is now a university-wide Center with three major components: 1) Research 2) Academic Instruction and 3) Community Service. These components now incorporate an award-winning undergraduate recruitment and retention program – the Academic Achievers Program, which has received Texas’ highest state award and White House recognition for its success; an undergraduate major and minor; CMALS Research Fellows; the Lydia Mendoza Graduate Fellowship Program that funds 30 students each year across multiple fields; a Visiting Scholars program, and Research initiatives, such as the development of the visual digital archive and public knowledge tool, Latino cARTographies.
In 2018-2024 CMALS became the headquarters of the country’s first national Latino research consortium, the Inter University Program on Latino Research [IUPLR], 22 university-related centers and institutes whose research focused on Latino communities. The IUPLR was fundamental to the development of Latino Studies in the U.S.
In 2019, CMALS was also the host of the Latino Art Now! Houston, a four-month city-wide event that brought together 70 local and mainstream arts and cultural organizations, more than 200 Houston Latino artists and resulted in a national conference. The UH Media Center’s estimated reach of this four-month event was 77.2 million and included local, national and international outlets.
CMALS subsequently created a visual digital artist directory, an interactive digital Artscape, Latino cARTographies. Latino cARTographies is a portable, fully bilingual, and truly interactive visual digital archive and public knowledge tool that features 300 local Houston Latino artists, public and private spaces.
CMALS arts efforts have also included the creation of a 45-minute immersive arts event, featured free to the public in 2023, art salons, and special art features, some of which are included on the digital board. CMALS has played a crucial role in transforming Houston’s art landscape, ensuring that Latino artists and their rich cultural heritage are celebrated and accessible to all. Several works by local Latino artists can be found at the Center.

3553 Cullen Blvd., Rom 323 Agnes Arnold Hall, Houston, TX, 77204-3001
The title of the mural is "Flor y Canto." It is the Spanish translation to a word from the Nahuatl language "Xochitl Cuicatl." Anguilu’s work is done on site without a plan or sketch. He finds rhythm with line work, mostly painted in black, though not in this particular mural. Anguilu uses color to create balance in the overall composition. His work is a modern interpretation of art that is ancient.
